Did you know about Alexander Miles?
Before automatic elevator doors, the doors and the shaft had to be shut manually. Unfortunately, people would forget to shut the doors and people would fall down elevator shafts.
Miles’ daughter almost fell down a shaft and he found a way to fix this problem. In 1887, Miles took out a patent for automatically closing elevator shafts and doors.
His designs are the basis of the automatic elevators we use today.
